The turning point of Tracy Chapman's career as a musician came shortly after graduating college, already with a repertoire of folk songs and now a contract with Elektra. In 1988, Tracy Chapman performed Fast Car, a song off her debut album, at the televised Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert. Fast Car rose fast on the US charts into the Top 10 and the album went multi-platinum.
